The Rite of Hares

The Rite of Hares was a springtime gathering held the weekend after Easter, created to honor the unseen hands who bring joy to others. I hid handcrafted egg invitations in local parks, addressed simply to “The Easter Bunny.” Inside each was a sculpted rabbit amulet—an ancient-feeling token of spring mischief and transformation.

Though none of the original Bunnies came, new eggs found new hands. The guests who arrived donned handmade hare masks, sipped tea from moonlit hare teacups, and feasted on edible bird nests and eggs inspired by native species and flavored with foraged plants like mugwort, biscuitroot, and plum blossom.

Each guest received a porcelain vessel shaped like a hare emerging from an egg. Into it, they placed an intention to carry spring’s joyful energy forward. What began as a thank-you became a rite of passage: strangers stepping into the sacred role of springtime shapeshifters.
